Our practice has added DXA bone densitometry with Instant Vertebral Assessment ™ (IVA) – the new standard in point-of-care fracture risk assessment to our women’s health services. Osteoporosis and related bone disease pose a serious threat to 34 million Americans – 80% of whom are women. Half of all women past menopause are at risk of developing osteoporosis…one out of four already have related vertebral fractures. Since most vertebral fractures are asymptomatic, the majority of these patients go untreated, putting them at great risk for subsequent fractures. Published studies using IVA show that up to 30% of patients needing treatment are missed using bone mineral density (BMD) as the sole criteria. With the addition of Instant Vertebral Assessment, doctors can now detect existing vertebral fractures, and dramatically decrease the risk of future fractures.  |
